Replacing a TPMS Sensor Is More Than Just Changing a Valve
A TPMS sensor is a small electronic transmitter mounted inside the wheel. It measures tyre pressure and sends information wirelessly to the vehicle.
The important part many owners do not realise is that each sensor has its own electronic identification number — its Sensor ID. On compatible Subaru systems that use stored sensor IDs, the vehicle needs to know which sensors it should be listening to.
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO UNDERSTAND
There Are Three Different Jobs Involved
The words programming, fitting and relearning are often used as though they mean the same thing. They don’t.

Preparing the TPMS Sensor
The replacement AUTOMATE sensor is programmed with the correct supported TPMS protocol for your Subaru application. This is done with the included Bluetooth TPMS Programmer.
02 — PHYSICAL FITMENT
Installing the Sensor Inside the Wheel
The tyre needs to be moved away from the rim so the old sensor can be removed and the replacement sensor installed. This part should be performed by a tyre shop or suitably equipped technician.
03 — VEHICLE REGISTRATION / RELEARN
Teaching the Subaru the New Sensor IDs
Where the compatible Subaru application requires sensor ID registration, the new IDs need to be written into the vehicle’s TPMS system. The included OBDII interface is designed for supported vehicle-side TPMS registration procedures.

Why Can a Brand-New Sensor Still Leave the TPMS Light On?
Imagine replacing a lost garage-door remote with a new remote. Even though the new remote works perfectly, the garage door may not respond until the new remote has been paired with it.
A TPMS system can work in a similar way. A correctly functioning replacement sensor can transmit pressure information, but on vehicles that require registration, the vehicle may still need the new sensor ID entered into its TPMS system before it recognises it.

WHAT IS A SENSOR ID?
Think of It as the Sensor’s Electronic Serial Number
Each TPMS sensor transmits an identification code along with its pressure information. This allows the vehicle to identify the sensors that belong to it rather than simply reacting to every nearby TPMS transmission.
When new sensors are installed on a Subaru application that uses stored IDs, those new IDs may need to be registered before the vehicle treats them as its own sensors.
WHAT ABOUT SENSOR CLONING?
Cloning and OBD Registration Are Not the Same Thing
This is another area where TPMS terminology can become confusing.
Creating a New Sensor ID
A replacement sensor can be programmed with a new supported ID. If the vehicle requires registration, that new ID must then be introduced to the vehicle using the appropriate relearn method.
Cloning an Existing ID
Where an original sensor ID can be read and the application supports cloning, the same ID can be programmed into a compatible replacement AUTOMATE sensor. The correct procedure depends on the vehicle and the condition of the original sensors.

The Complete Process
The exact procedure depends on the Subaru model and TPMS system, but this explains the general workflow.
Step 1 — Confirm Vehicle Compatibility
Confirm the Subaru model, year and, where required, VIN or original sensor information before programming or installation.
Step 2 — Prepare the Replacement Sensors
Use the included Bluetooth Programmer and supported app procedure to prepare the compatible AUTOMATE sensors for the vehicle.
Step 3 — Have the Sensors Installed
Take the programmed sensors to a tyre shop or suitably equipped technician to have them physically installed inside the wheels.
Step 4 — Register the Sensor IDs
Where the supported Subaru requires OBD registration, connect the included OBDII interface and follow the supplied vehicle-specific procedure to register the sensor IDs.
Step 5 — Verify the TPMS System
Complete any final vehicle-specific steps and confirm that the vehicle is receiving the sensors correctly and that the TPMS warning is no longer indicating an unresolved sensor issue.
IMPORTANT
You Still Need a Tyre Shop for Physical Sensor Installation
This is a DIY TPMS programming and registration kit. It is not a tyre-changing kit.
The TPMS sensor is mounted inside the wheel, so tyre-changing equipment is required to access and replace it safely. You can handle the compatible electronic programming and registration process yourself while leaving the physical tyre work to a tyre professional.

Why TPMS Frequency Matters
TPMS sensors communicate by radio frequency. Different vehicles and markets can use different TPMS frequencies and communication protocols.
The AUTOMATE platform supports compatible TPMS applications across 315 MHz and 433 MHz. The important part is not simply choosing a sensor because the frequency looks correct — the sensor must also be configured with the correct supported protocol for the specific vehicle.

Do the sensors arrive already fitted to the wheels?
No. TPMS sensors are fitted inside the wheel and require the tyre to be moved away from the rim. A tyre shop or suitable technician should perform the physical installation.
Why is an OBDII interface included?
Because some compatible Subaru TPMS systems require replacement sensor IDs to be registered to the vehicle. The OBDII interface is used for supported vehicle-side TPMS registration procedures.
Why do I also need the Bluetooth Programmer?
